As this year is drawing to a close, it’s only natural to focus on what’s coming up next and the future. But before moving on so quickly, take some time to reflect on this year and set goals for what you want to accomplish next. Ask yourself: What’s been working and serving me well? What needs to be left in 2023? And which paths need redirecting?
Making the proper lists can set your mind right and motivate you to work smarter (not harder). Here are 3 lists for you to get started on to end the year with more clarity.
Before jumping into a list of things you want to gain in 2024, count everything you currently have. Starting your year with gratitude and recognizing the things and people who have helped you get to where you are now adds extra motivation to revamp your 2024 career path. Think back on the moments that have pushed you past your limits, and the people that stood by you through your highs and lows.
Putting together all of these things can help you realize that, no matter how far you plan to go next year, you have already come this far! Growth that’s rooted in gratitude can motivate you to develop a more positive outlook, and even help you become more proactive. Counting even the little things in 2023 can inform the choices and goals you’ll work towards in 2024, so take some time to reminisce before moving forward!
Let’s think of this list as your very own “Wall of Achievements” from 2023. The idea is to track all the great things you accomplished, big or small, without comparing yourself to anyone else. Listing all your wins down is a great way to beat the dreaded imposter syndrome, and remind yourself of all your skills. Seeing your success written down makes it feel even more real, and that’s a great way to appreciate what you’ve done.
Remember, it’s not just about checking a big goal off the list. It’s about celebrating all the little steps you took along the way, which made your journey more enjoyable. When you look back on what you’ve achieved, you’ll find satisfaction in knowing it’s not just a simple “yes” or “no” answer, but a series of smaller accomplishments that got you to where you are now. Be proud of that!
And now review the flip side of things — what you want to improve moving forward. Maybe you got burnt out from taking on too many overtime projects or lost contact with key relationships this year, this is the time to reflect on these instances. You will feel resistance to this at the start, but it’s a big, first step to personal growth.
As you work towards career success in 2024, you’ll need to become a new version of yourself and that’s why it’s important to figure out what’s holding you back. Just remember, don’t be too hard on yourself or get lost in self-pity during this exercise. We are all human and make mistakes, it’s about how you plan to bounce back that is most important.
Now that you’ve reflected on your last year, it’s time to take action on your goals. Every new year is a fresh chance to get closer to your big dreams, and I hope you use every opportunity you get to swing for the fences. Rooting for you!
