5 Steps To Build A Killer Personal Brand

As seen on Forbes.

These days, people don’t just Google companies; they Google you. Whether you’re job hunting, freelancing, or just want to stand out, your personal brand is more than just your name or title, it is your reputation in digital form.

A strong personal brand helps you stand out, build trust, and attract the right opportunities. Let me teach you how I built my following from zero in 2019 to more than 2 million today at Workhap. Here’s how to build a personal brand that actually reflects who you are.

Define Your Identity

Before you share yourself with the world, take the time to figure out what matters to you. What do you actually stand for? What are the things that give you fire and make you get up and achieve your goals? What are the things you are most passionate about?

It can be anything from caring for the environment, women’s rights, animal welfare, or advocating for work-life balance. The important thing is that it is close to your values and beliefs. Basically, you need to ask yourself, “What do I want to be known for?”

Know Your Audience

Your personal brand should resonate with the people you want to connect with. It should answer the question, “What kind of people do you want to influence or attract?” They can be from any group of people, such as employers, clients, or followers.

Once you identify your target audience, learn the things they care about. What challenges are they facing? What kind of voices or content do they trust? What values do they align with?

For instance, if you’re targeting employers, dig into the types of candidates they usually hire. What skills and qualities do they value? The more you understand their mindset, the easier it becomes to create content that feels relevant and helpful and speaks directly to their needs and interests.

Craft Your Brand Story

According to the book, Networking Without Small Talk: A New Playbook for Introverts on the Job Hunt, you need to “Create a truly unique online and offline identity showcasing your skills, expertise, and personality. If you have a hyper-specific work-related skill that is unusual, share it!”

Crafting your brand message or story is one of the main points of building your brand. You have to communicate your identity to your audience and show empathy by making your story relatable and authentic.

Write a compelling personal bio. Make your ‘About Me’ page as striking and colorful as you want, without sacrificing your integrity.

Develop content with a consistent tone and voice. Share your personal journey by showcasing the challenges you faced. Post the small and big wins you achieved.

Build Your Online Presence

In building your online presence, you can check and try using several platforms and choose one or two that perfectly align with your goals.

For instance, LinkedIn is mainly used for professional branding, while Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube cater to creative or lifestyle niches.

Most importantly, do not forget to build a personal website for full control and credibility. Be consistent with your profile photo, bios, and visual branding, such as using colors, fonts, or tone. After all, your website is the home base for your personal brand, where the audience can learn and read up on everything you want to share and communicate.

Show Up And Deliver Value

At the end of the day, no brand grows without showing up. Consistently. Share content that’s thoughtful and relevant to your space. This could be your insights on current issues, work-life-balance tips, inspiring stories, or case studies.

Raise engagement by responding to comments and DMs. You can also network with others in your space, as well as collaborate with other content creators for variety.

Building a personal brand takes time, and yes, it can feel like a slow climb. But the more you show up with purpose, the more trust and visibility you’ll earn. Keep it consistent. Keep it real. And over time, the right people will start to take notice.
